Cyprus U16 national basketball team unsuccessful in Sarajevo

JOSEPH HART came off the bench to score 14 points as England trounced Cyprus 78-48 in the third round of the Termosteps U16 European Championship Division B on Sunday afternoon in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Cypriots were trailing by only six points at the half-time 31-25, but the Englishmen managed to hold their opponents at only nine points in the third quarter while scoring 27 in the process to definitely put the game beyond the reach. Hart and Vincent Van Ness each had five points in this period.

James Blandford and Devon Van Oostrum had 11 and 10 points for England respectively, while Aaron Geramipoor recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Riginos Kasinopoulos led Cyprus and all the scorers with 18 points, while Andreas Vlachos chipped in with 14.

This is a third consecutive defeat for Michalis Tsangarides’ team at this tournament. In the opening round they lost heavily to Bulgaria 94-39 with Michalis Kantartzis being the only player to enter double digits with 12 points, while in the second round Romania beat Cyprus by nine points 65-56 with Simon Michail and Andreas Vlachos scoring 17 and 13 points respectively.

Cyprus was scheduled to face Switzerland late last night, while today at 5pm they take on the group leaders Slovenia.
