Paphos water pipe faces new delays

A new water pipe in Paphos may not be finished on time to bring much-needed water supply to the town before the winter sets in.

Mayor of Paphos Savvas Vergas yesterday expressed his concerns following a meeting with chief of the Paphos Water Board Kyriacos Spanos.

Vergas confirmed that Paphos wouldn’t be receiving any of the water being shipped in from Greece, but instead would obtain water from Kannaviou dam.

Work is currently under way on a government funded project to connect the dams of Kannaviou and Asprokremmos, via a new main supply pipe.

Kannaviou holds a large quantity of water, and it’s hoped the pipeline will be up and running by autumn. Fears are that the dry weather may continue without any significant rainfall in Paphos.

The mayor explained that as parts of the new pipe will be laid across private land, special permits must be obtained. It is this which is holding up progress.

Meanwhile, Spanos confirmed that Paphos has made water savings of 21.5 per cent, in line with other towns.
