‘Top quality Greek water will be distributed this weekend’

THE WATER brought in from Greece has passed all quality controls and will be distributed this weekend, Agricultural Minister Michalis Polynikis said yesterday. Meanwhile, works on the pump and pipeline continue and connection to the supply system is believed to finish soon.

Polinykis presented the lab results at a news conference yesterday. “The water is of very good quality and conforms to EU qualifications regarding drinkable water,” he said. A detailed analysis was carried out to ensure the water was not affected during transportation.

The minister said the water was of top quality, both chemically and microbiologically. “The same tests will also be conducted on the water from the next five tankers due to arrive”, he said.

Works on the undersea pipeline continued intensively yesterday and its completion was expected later in the day, stated Chief engineer of the Water Development Board, Kyriakos Kirou.

“The remaining connection to the supply system land pump is expected to be completed during the weekend and if all goes ahead well then the water distribution will begin on Sunday evening or Monday,” said Kirou.

He also said that the majority of the water would flow through the Limassol water supply network, while a certain amount would be distributed through the Yermasogia network in order to deliver water to areas east of the town as well. In case of surplus, water would also be distributed through the south pump.

Kirou emphasised the need for all operations to be completed efficiently to avoid interruptions in the daily flow of the 50,000 cubic metres of water.

“Water transport from Greece does not solve our problems but helps us considerably until we move ahead with the urgent issue of distillations,” said Polinikis yesterday, and pleaded the public to continue prudent water consumption.
