Peyia hopes for its own Post Office at last

THE MAYOR of Peyia is hopeful that his seven-year wait for a post office may at last be coming to an end.

At present deliveries must come from the central post office in Paphos, delaying mail to the nearly 10,000 residents.

But Mayor Neophytos Akourshiotis told the Cyprus Mail yesterday he hoped this may soon change.

”We have been waiting and asking for about the last seven years,” acknowledged the mayor. ”The ex-minister of Transport and Public works, Haris Thrassou, told us that the population of Peyia was too small to warrant our own Post Office and refused our request.

”He said only two or three thousand people live in Peyia, which is just not true.”

Peyia’s population has mushroomed over the last few years and supports a large number of British residents. Due to the sheer numbers of people, Paphos central postal services have been stretched to the limit, and at times mail delivery has been late.

”I think the population of Peyia stands at about 10,000,” said Akourshiotis. ”It has grown so quickly. And I estimate around 4,000 of those are British and other EU citizens,” he said.

‘We have written lots of letters to the government over the years, and finally the new Minister of works, Nicos Nicolaides, seems to understand our plight. He confirmed to me he understands how many people live here, and he seems to be in favour of us having our own post office.”

Akourshiotis continued, ”I will be meeting with him in a couple of weeks time in Nicosia to discuss the matter. I hope to have a positive outcome,” he said.
