A 70-YEAR-old Czech tourist was yesterday in critical condition after she was found floating unconscious in the sea, police said.
The woman was found at around 3pm on Friday in the Oroklini area.
She was in a comatose state and transferred to Larnaca general hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Pedestrian critical
A 33-YEAR-old pedestrian was in critical condition after he was knocked down during the early hours of yesterday, police said.
The accident occurred on Gregoris Afxentiou Avenue in Kokkinotrimithia at around 1.10am.
The 33-year-old Romanian man was knocked down by a 43-year-old Nicosia district village man, police said.
The younger man was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital. Police said he was intubated and his condition is deemed critical.
The car driver scored a blood alcohol level of zero when tested.
Kokkinotrimithia police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Thieves raid jewellery
A LIMASSOL woman reported almost €50,000 worth of valuables stolen from her home, police said yesterday.
The woman told police thieves had broken into her home sometime between 11am and 2.30pm on Friday and stole jewellery worth €42,600.
Meanwhile a Limassol man reported a car break-in at around 1pm on Friday. He said thieves had stolen a briefcase containing €7,600 in cash as well as a cheque written out for €893. The thieves also stole four credit cards and a cheque book. At the time of the break-in his car had been parked on Rigas Fereou Street. It was unlocked, police said.
Heroin arrest
A GEORGIAN couple were yesterday arrested in Paphos for heroin possession, police said.
The duo, who are in their late twenties, have been living in Cyprus illegally for the past four years.
Armed with a search warrant, Drug Squad officers raided the pair’s home during the early hours of yesterday. During a search of the home, investigators found two used syringes in the kitchen containing traces of a liquid substance believed to be heroin, a piece of aluminium foil containing traces of a liquid substance also believed to be heroin, and a piece of cotton wool coated in a liquid substance believed to be heroin.
The 28-year-old man was arrested and in his statement said the heroin was his own for personal use. Further investigations revealed he had been on the island illegally since 2004.
Meanwhile police said his 27-year-old partner had also been in Cyprus illegally for the past four years. She told police she’d crossed over to the free areas from the occupied north.
The pair were arrested pending further Drug Squad and Minor Crimes Unit investigations, police said.
Brazilian extortion claim
A 36-YEAR-old Brazilian man was yesterday remanded in six-day custody on suspicion of extortion, police said.
The complaint was made by three Brazilian artistes employed at a Limassol music and dance club, who said the man, also employed at the same club, had threatened to send them back home if they didn’t pay him.
According to the women, between April 27 and May 28 the 36-year-old managed to take at total €3,170 off the women.
The suspect was arrested during the early hours and later remanded in custody.
