Perdikis recovering after heart operation

GREEN Party leader George Perdikis is expected to return to his political duties in one week after being discharged from hospital.

The 46-year-old on Friday underwent a coronary angioplasty at the Cardiology Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital and has been recovering at home since Saturday.

His doctor has said that he will be able gradually to return to work after seven days.

A statement released by the Greens wished Perdikis, “a complete and speedy recovery.”

Balloon angioplasty of the coronary artery is a procedure that relieves narrowing and obstruction of the arteries to the muscle of the heart. This allows more blood and oxygen to be delivered to the heart muscle.

The procedure includes the use of balloons and stents. When successful, the device can relieve chest pain of angina, improve the prognosis of patients with unstable angina, and minimise or stop the risk of a heart attack without having the patient undergo open heart surgery.
