Arrest over Turf Club arson

A 58-YEAR-old Nicosia man was yesterday remanded in custody for eight days in connection with the arson attack against Cyprus Turf Club manager Eftychios Hadjieftychiou during the early hours of Monday, police said.

The suspect is also believed to have been involved in the March 18 car bomb incident outside the Cyprus Turf Club’s offices in Nicosia. The target at the time had been Turf Club president Stelios Panayides’ Mercedes.

Monday night’s arson occurred at 3.30am outside Hadjieftychiou’s Aglandja home. The Turf Club manager’s car was set ablaze and the fire quickly spread to his wife’s car which was parked in front of his. Hadjieftychiou’s vehicle was completely destroyed and his wife’s was extensively damaged.

Monday’s attack against Hadjieftychiou was the fourth time in six months a member of the Turf Club has been targeted.
