President Kyprianou yesterday told the new US Ambassador Mr Stine that Cyprus wants American friendship and was ready to do its utmost in this direction but there was a need for substantive response. The President made a strong appeal for the revision of the Carter Administration’s decision to seek the lifting of US arms embargo and said this has caused deep disappointment because as he said a lot of things are at stake in this decision.

Troops and police went into action with tear gas in Washington this afternoon as a new wave of fire-bombing and looting hit the city. The troops, with bayonets fixed and wearing gas masks, moved in to disperse crowds and protect firemen fighting three huge blazes in a ghetto area. They also pumped gas into stores to drive out young Negro looters.

Cheryl Turner, 14-year-old daughter of screen star Lana Turner, will appear in a juvenile court in Hollywood tomorrow after confessing she stabbed to death her mother’s friend, 42-year-old minor gangster, Johnny Stompanato. Cheryl has been in jail over the weekend booked on a holding charge peculiar to California law called suspicion of murder.
