Man held for armed mugging

A 40-YEAR-old-man from a village of the Nicosia District was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, illegal possession and transport of a firearm, and attacking and causing bodily harm.
At 8pm on Monday, the 40-year-old man, armed with a gun, managed to steal a bag of a 50-year-old woman about to enter a betting shop in a village in the Paphos district. The bag contained €1,000 in cash, and after striking her with his gun he fled the scene.

A 34-year-old-man appeared on the scene and chased after the culprit and after a struggle managed to stop the thief until the police arrived.

The suspect is also being investigated in connection with the burglary of a house in a village in the Nicosia district, and stealing a shotgun.

He was remanded in custody to help police with their enquiries.

The 50-year-old woman and the 34-year-old man who made the citizen’s arrest were both taken to Paphos General Hospital, where it doctors found the woman had a fracture in her right arm and the man was treated for light blows on various parts of his body. The suspect was also taken to hospital as he suffered bruises and scratches on various parts of his body after the struggle with the 34-year-old.
