Almost 200 booked overnight for speeding, drink driving

During checks on Saturday night and early Sunday, police booked 169 people for speeding and 28 for drink driving islandwide, they said.

One of those booked for speeding was driving at 150kph in a 100kph zone in Larnaca.

Though officers signalled the driver, a 23-year-old from Larnaca, to stop, he failed to do so but police chased him down and intercepted him on the highway close to the Rizoelia roundabout just outside the town. He was arrested, charged and released.

Despite police clampdowns and campaigns the number of road fatalities has risen this year. The number for the whole of last year was 45, and for 2013 it was 44.

This year’s number jumped to 43 so far this year on Saturday when a 19-year-old woman was killed in an accident in Limassol when her car collided with that of another 19-year-old woman. The second driver was not injured.
