Plans to improve Mesa Yeitonia traffic problem

MESA Yeitonia Council has announced the completion of the first phase of plans for the construction of a four-lane road along Makarios III Avenue. The project is expected to seriously alleviate the traffic congestion problems in the area.

“The completion of the first phase of the project will alleviate rush hour traffic congestion,” said Christos Mesis, Mayor of Mesa Yeitonia.

“The Public Works Department had completed a study measuring the effect the creation of the road would have on traffic congestion. The study confirms that the problem will be reduced,” Mesis added.

The first phase of the project was completed with a small delay, two weeks after the deadline. The new road starts from Stavros Stylianides roundabout and ends before Exarhou street traffic lights. The second phase of the project will see the extension of the four-lane road from Exarhou Street to the ESEL supermarket in the area.

The date for the beginning of work on the second phase has not been set yet, although the Mayor of Mesa Yeitonia confirmed that pressure is being exerted on the Ministry of Interior and on Town Planning to speed up the process.

“We have been exerting pressure to move the process ahead for two years now. We do understand that part of the delay is due to the fact that the second phase was not included in the original plans. We hope that very soon the bidding process will start, which will pave the way for execution,” Mesis explained.

“Only when the whole project gets completed can we have a clear picture of its effect on traffic. At present, we only have part of the work in place. Of course, the project will only alleviate the problem – it is not a 100 per cent solution,” he added.
