HUNDREDS of Cyprus Airways passengers were stranded at Larnaca Airport after casting their vote, as flights back to Greece were cancelled due to bad weather conditions at their destination.

Flights to and from Athens international airport were grounded because of poor visibility, which was at less than 100 metres.

Passengers, however, complained that no one had informed them of these cancellations prior to their arrival at the airport, and Airport and Cyprus Airways staff faced a barrage of complaints about the situation.

Kyriacos Kyriacou, Cyprus Airways Spokesman, called on passengers to be patient and understanding and assured them that the company was making all the necessary arrangements to carry out the flights in safety as soon as weather conditions allowed.

The head of Cyprus Airways Customers’ Services at Larnaca and Paphos airports, Andreas Protopapas, said yesterday: “I officially declare that Cyprus Airways passengers that flew with low-cost tickets where the campaign staff paid the extra fee will not pay anything for changes to their tickets.”

The situation at Larnaca airport was described as chaotic, with lengthy delays, and several cancellations.

With the weather conditions improving in Athens yesterday morning, and Greek authorities allowing planes to land after 10am, delays were then caused in Larnaca, when some passengers decided to change their departure time, asking for their luggage to be returned.

Communication and Public Relations Manager of Hermes Airports, Adamos Aspris, thanked passengers and the public more generally for their understanding, since it was clearly a matter of safety for flights to and from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport.

Flights to Athens international airport were grounded on Sunday. The snowstorm, the result of two cold fronts moving south from Russia and Scandinavia, struck Athens on Sunday, covering the Parthenon and the temple of Zeus in white.
