Mari villagers to move to Zygi

THE RESIDENTS of the Limassol village of Mari will soon be evacuating their homes and moving to Zygi.

The decision was made to avoid the health repercussions from the Electricity Station in neighbouring Vasiliko.

The Cabinet decision will be implemented straight after the presidential elections this month.

The 163 residents from 40 families expressed their satisfaction at the decision, which was announced yesterday afternoon.

Interior Minister Christos Patsalides announced that extra funding would be offered to help the Mari expatriates to build their new homes on land that was allotted for this purpose in Zygi

“We have reached a point where I would say better late than never, where this problem will be resolved and the necessary transfer can take place,” Patsalides said, addressing a communal conference.

Maria Georgiou, a Mari resident, added: “This is was a battle that spanned over 19 years. Today we feel happy as we feel we have reached the desired result.”
