Water supplies resumed after cuts

WATER supplies were back on track yesterday as problems that had caused cuts throughout Nicosia, Larnaca and the free Famagusta district on Wednesday were brought under control.

According to Nicos Zambakides, the head of the Nicosia Water Board, there were a few minor problems in specific areas of the capital, where homes remained water for few hours.

He explained that this was not because the water had been cut off, but because the Nicosia water system was empty, as were the houses’ water tanks.

Nicosia having various altitudes coupled with the way the capital’s water system was built meant that houses on lower ground would fill up first, followed by those higher up.

Shedding more light onto Wednesday’s cuts, Zambakides said the technical problems at the Tersefanou plant, as well as the Larnaca and Dhekelia desalination units, had led to a ten-hour water cut in Nicosia.

Seaweed had blocked the entrance into the unit, reducing water production by 10 per cent.

Furthermore, maintenance works at the Larnaca desalination unit intensified the problem.

Finally, Zambakides called on the public to be patient in the event of any problems and sent out a plea for them to save water.
