New poll shows Christofias gaining ground

AKEL candidate Demetris Christofias is gaining ground on incumbent President Tassos Papadopoulos, according to the latest poll published yesterday in Simerini.

The poll, carried out by Insight Market Research, shows Christofias with 32.6 per cent to Papadopoulos’ 33.1 per cent and Kasoulides’ 29.1 per cent.

It also shows a new gain by Papadopoulos, who polled 32.5 per cent in the same paper’s poll earlier in the week.

Christofias was also second in that poll, with 31.9 per cent, and DISY candidate Ioannis Kasoulides further behind with 28.1 per cent. He has also gained slightly since the earlier version.

In a second round between Papadopoulos and Christofias, the poll gives Christofias the winning edge with 44.1 per cent of the vote to Papadopoulos’ 41.7 per cent.

In a run off between Papadopoulos and Kasoulides the incumbent would win with 48.2 per cent to 37.3 per cent.

If Kasoulides runs against Christofias, he would also lose with only 37.4 per cent of the vote to the AKEL leader’s 44.5 per cent.

There have been a plethora of polls this week ahead of next month’s elections.

In the poll published in Politis last Sunday Kasoulides, at 30.5 per cent, came out slightly ahead of Papadopoulos’ 30.3 per cent. It was the first poll to put any of the other candidates ahead of the President.

An Antenna poll on Wednesday week also put Papadopoulos as the most popular choice with 32.8 per cent, then Christofias with 30.1 per cent, followed by Kasoulides with 29.6 per cent.

On Tuesday, Plus TV which is affiliated to AKEL, published a poll conducted by GPO. In that, Papadopoulos came first with 31.1 per cent, Christofias second with 30 per cent and Kasoulides third with 28 per cent.
