Bar review: Galu Beach Bar, Oroklini, Larnaca

During these times of tough economic hardships, it’s refreshing to know that the arty-farty Nicosia based glitterati are still alive and well.

And at the weekends they hop into their BMWs, Mercs and Porsches and zoom down the highway to the new capital of cool… Galu in Oroklini.

This self-consciously fashionable bar has to be the champion of the new wave of seaside hangouts, which despite their marked-up prices, seem to do very well.

Once installed on our outdoor sofa on a humid, balmy Cyprus night, we waited 25 minutes for the drinks – I would imagine waiting until you are gasping is all part of the trendy experience.

New concepts and configurations of bar seem to spring up every summer and the latest is all about white furniture, bright cushions, dim blue lights and Buddha-bar type musak continually playing in the background.

The crowd at Galu is mostly late 20s to mid-30s, but, like many bars these days, everyone is welcomed without much attitude.

Even though the Oroklini area is popular with families and groups wanting a good value bucket-and-spade holiday on its spacious beaches – this bar is devoid of them (and with a glass of wine at €5.70, J&B Whisky €7, cup of tea €4 you can understand why).

Galu has ambition to be a premier dine and wine spot, as it’s located directly on the seafront near Oroklini fire station.

In addition to the bar, Galu also has a restaurant, which despite offering a very limited menu is excellent. They serve Angus beef, Sword Fish and Sea Bream (at €36).

The restaurant service was polite, the food delicious and despite the tiny menu, it turned out to be a very pleasant experience.
