Fire breaks out in old town restaurant

NICOSIA’S old town was briefly shrouded in acrid smoke yesterday, after an oil fire broke out at the Karbouno Margeremata restaurant on Ledra Street.

At around 12.40pm two fire engines, carrying six firemen arrived at the smouldering restaurant. Initially the firemen carried hoses into the Surf and Chat internet cafe. Within minutes smoke started to pour out of the front entrance of the restaurant.

Andreas Christodoulou, Nicosia Fire Department Sergeant, said “This was caused by oil on the barbeque setting alight. Within 15 minutes the fire was under control.”

At around 12.55 a man emerged from the Chat and Surf Internet cafe carrying a household fire extinguisher. He confirmed that the fire had been put out and that nobody was hurt during the incident.
