Cypriot appointed to US law council

FORMER ambassador Andreas Jacovides has been selected to join the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) as one of it counsellors. Jacovides, a legal expert in international law, served as ambassador of Cyprus to the UN and the US. He led the Cyprus delegation to the UN conference on the Law of the Sea and signed the relevant Convention on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus in 1982. His formal election to the Executive Council will take place during the annual general meeting of ASIL in March. Other counsellors chosen to join the Executive Council were former judge of the US Supreme Court Sandra Day O’Connor and German judge at the International Court of Justice at The Hague Bruno Simma. ASIL is a non-profit, non-partisan, educational membership organisation founded in 1906 and chartered by Congress in 1950. Its mission is to foster the study of international law and to promote the establishment and maintenance of international relations on the basis of law and justice. (CNA)
