Logo chosen for Republic’s 50th anniversary celebrations

A THIRD-YEAR Greek-Cypriot art student has won a competition to design the logo to be used for all official events and activities – both locally and abroad – to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus in 2010.

The design by Savvas Thoma, a third-year student in Graphic Arts and Advertising Design at Frederick University, was chosen by the executive committee in charge of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations from among 127 entries submitted by graphic and plastic artists on an anonymous basis.

According to the committee, “the candidate’s entry approaches the subject through geometric subtraction and stands out in terms of design excellence and clarity. The logo has a simple and clear symbolism, is executed in a modern and imaginative way and can be applied effectively on a small or large scale.”

The committee consists of representatives of the Ministries of Education & Culture, Finance, Foreign Affairs and Commerce & Tourism, plus two representatives of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts (EKATE).

Education Ministry official Yiannis Economides told the Mail yesterday that entries were invited from the whole island, and that “interest was expressed by Turkish-Cypriots”, as had been the case with other competitions promoted by the Education Ministry.

Thoma will receive a cash prize of €5,000 for his winning entry. Second and third prizes of €2,000 and €1,000 respectively have also been awarded.
