Search on for teenage sailor

A SEARCH and rescue operation from air, land and sea was in full operation last night off the coast of Limassol after a 16-year-old boy was declared lost at sea.
The 16-year-old was training at the Yachting Club in Ayios Tychonas with his coach and co-athletes in preparation for a January competition. At around 4.15pm, police were alerted to the fact that the 16-year-old was the only person not to return to shore with his yacht.
The authorities scrambled two helicopters and three navy boats to begin the search for the teenager while a number of fishing boats, and a vessel from the Fisheries Department also joined in. Members of the police and fire service were mobilised to stand on the coastline looking for any signs of the missing 16-year-old from shore.
A Limassol police spokesman said yesterday that rescuers were searching the sea from the Holiday Inn area in Limassol to Zygi, due to winds. He said the search would continue through the night, despite the enveloping darkness. There was still no sight of the young sailor at the time the paper went to press.
