Four-hour driving clampdown nets 900 violations

POLICE yesterday reported over 900 drivers for various traffic violations during a four-hour crackdown across the island.

As part of their campaign to prevent and reduce traffic accidents police carried out an islandwide campaign between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. an official statement said.

During that time officers reported 917 people for various violations and handed out 163 written warnings.

Police booked 209 drivers for speeding while 164 were reported for driving without a seatbelt.

Officers also booked 160 drivers for having their “hands free” while driving. The police statement did not specify if this regarded speaking on the phone while driving or any other violations.

Seventy-two drivers were booked for parking on the opposite lane of the road – an offence that went mostly unpunished until now.

Most bookings – 220 – were categorised under ‘other’ without any other details.

During the campaign police also handed out information material to drivers.
