October road toll reached 11

THE LATEST road fatality, 76-year-old pedestrian Rebecca Aristidou from Stroumbi in Paphos brought the accident death toll in October to 11.
The accident took place on the main Polis Chrysochous-Paphos road on Saturday around 6.30pm. The elderly woman, who was wearing black, was trying to cross the road on foot at a spot without adequate lighting. She was run over by a car driven by a 28-year-old woman from Paphos, who later told police that she did not see Aristidou on the road.
The victim was taken to Paphos General Hospital where her death was confirmed. The 28-year-old was remanded to aid investigations and then released. According to police the driver was not speeding and the accident was attributed to poor lighting, the absence of pavements on the street and the fact that the victim had been wearing black.
On the same spot another pedestrian had lost her life five years ago, raising questions on the safety of the road in question, particularly for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, in Larnaca a 16-year-old was caught by police speeding on the motorway, with his father in the driver’s seat. The underage boy was driving at 147km per hour, well over the 100km speed limit. While on the Larnaca-Kofinou motorway, the driver was signaled by a traffic police officer and asked to stop. The boy ignored the instructions and sped off. He was later stopped a few kilometers away.
When the car stopped, the police officer saw the boy trying to switch seats with a man sitting in the passenger seat. It was later discovered that the man was the boy’s 42-year-old father. Both later admitted that they tried to switch seats.
The teen was charged with driving without a licence, insurance and for speeding. His father was also charged with allowing his son to drive without a licence and without insurance. Both will be appearing in court.
