Old hospital is a vital part of the island’s medical history

With reference to the comment by V. Anastasiou concerning the old Nicosia General Hospital printed in the Sunday Mail (October 11), I would like to add my voice to that of my much respected colleague.

For us nurses, speaking solely from my profession’s point of view, the old Nicosia General Hospital is not just a building in the centre of Nicosia. On a purely subjective and emotional level, it is where we trained, where we worked, where we laughed and where we cried.

It is a place in which we saw pain beyond your imagination and on the other hand, the happiness and relief that recovery brings. As humans beings, we were moulded by our experiences in this specific hospital despite all its technical faults and the difficulties it challenged us with on a daily basis.
For me on a personally, it is where I was born as a nurse, a profession that has a meaning for me that can no way be conveyed with words.

If the old hospital is demolished a part of our professional, personal and cultural history will go down with it too.
