Local man arrested for London assault

A 42-YEAR-OLD man from Paralamni was arrested yesterday on a European arrest warrant in connection with charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, car theft and damage to property.

The arrest warrant was issued by Interpol in London on August 28, 2009, leading to the man’s arrest yesterday morning by Famagusta CID.

According to police, the man is wanted in connection with a stolen car reported in London on February 4, 2005. The 42-year-old was allegedly caught by police driving the stolen car on February 9.

During his capture, he allegedly hit a policeman and a patrol car. The police officer, after spending a few months receiving medical treatment, later retired on medical grounds, said a police spokesman yesterday.

Following a number of adjournments, the final trial date was set for August 6, 2009, which the Paralimni man reportedly missed, leading to the issuing of a European Arrest Warrant and his subsequent arrest.
