Clerides undergoes heart surgery

FORMER President Glafcos Clerides yesterday underwent emergency surgery at the Apollonion Hospital to open a small artery in his heart.

According to his doctor Iosif Kasios, Clerides had complained of chest pains early yesterday evening, “and we deemed it necessary to carry out an emergency catheterisation”.

He added, “Mr Clerides was taken to the Apollonion at around 7.30, where the catholicisation was carried out and we found a small artery was blocked, which was opened and everything is fine for now”.

The former President yesterday remained in hospital, while doctors are expected to decide today whether he will be released or not.

DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades visited Clerides after the operation and later emerged looking positive and optimistic, saying the surgery had been a success and everything seemed to be fine.
