Volunteer mission to Kenya declared a success

‘VOLUNTEER Doctors – Cyprus’ met all their targets during a recent mission to Kenya, its members announced yesterday.

During the mission – which took place between April 3 and April 20 and included a dentist, reporter, paediatricians, a work therapist, chiropractor and other volunteers – medical treatment was offered to over 800 children and adults. Moreover, 200 children were photographed as part of plans to improve a fostering programme and support was offered to local medial centres.

According to the organisation’s members, when they first visited the country in 2003, and especially Riruta, which is considered one of the poorest areas of Nairobi, medical services were almost non-existent.

The area’s residents lived in sordid conditions, without drinking water or electricity, and illnesses such as AIDS and malaria thriving. There were out-patients clinics in the area, but they were merely small rooms without the necessary medical equipment.

So the decision was made to start by building the basic medical substructure, including a modern dentist clinic and paediatric department.

The organisation covers the doctors’ wages and training, while also offering funding pharmaceutical supplies.
