World Health Day

WORLD HEALTH Day 2009 was marked yesterday with theme ‘Save Lives: Make hospitals safe in emergencies’. Health Minister Christos Patsalides emphasised on the importance of investing in infrastructure that could serve people safely in an emergency such as a natural disaster. “In recent years our planet has experienced numerous and tragic natural disasters, and disasters caused by man himself,” he said. “The emergency cases can be earthquakes, fires, serious accidents, accidents caused by human negligence. Cyprus has so far been fortunate to not deal with major natural disasters. This might make us happy but it also urges us to be prepared to face any emergency incident,” he added. A drill exercise was also carried out titles ‘Fire in the Head Office of Cyta’, which involved rescuing trapped people from the roof of the building. “This stressed the importance of coordination and early intervention in case a fire breaks out in a large organisation which employs a large number of employees in a building,” said Patsalides.
