Fewer voter registrations for euroelections

THE NUMBER of new voter registrations in view of the upcoming European parliament elections is dramatically smaller than initially expected. According to Interior Ministry, only 5,000 new voters of a total of 12,000 newly-eligible voters have registered.

“With new voters we should have been close to 12,000, but at present we are a bit above 5,000. Unfortunately, the numbers are much lower than what we expected, but there is still time for young people and their families to be registered in the list,” said Lazaros Savvides, General Director of the Ministry of Interiors.

In addition to the slow response by new voters, there has also been a lack of interest by Turkish Cypriots to vote in the euro elections, as only 300 Turkish Cypriots have registered to vote.

The deadline for registration is tomorrow at 6pm. Savvides said registration could take place either by submitting applications in person to district administrators or on the internet. According to Savvides, the majority of new voters, however, chose to register via Cypriot embassies abroad.

“People can register directly online by visiting the Ministry of Interiors webpage. Citizens can fill in application forms online and submit it,” Savvides said.
