Ormidia action group battle waste disposal site construction

A GROUP of Ormidia residents are battling the decision to construct a waste disposal site in their village.

The action group argues the project will put a further strain the area’s environment, the group said. It blamed the village council for the decision to place the rubbish disposal site in the town.

“We are reacting for the simple reason that Ormidia’s natural environment is already extremely strained. It’s like the seven plagues of the Pharaoh. No-one can tell what will happen in the next five years. We will have a huge problem,” said Steve Efstathiou, representative of the Ormidia citizen’s group.

The group staged a demonstration on Wednesday, closing off the Ayia Napa-Larnaca motorway for half an hour. The citizen group blames the village council, arguing that they invited the state to locate the dumping site at Ormidia.

“We have information that it was going in Paralimni and then the Ormidia community council invited the state to place it here,” Efstathiou said.

The group warned that unless the decision is reconsidered, more drastic measures will ensue.
