Paphos to be ‘more flexible’ with water supply this summer?

A ‘FLEXIBLE’ approach will be taken to supplying water to Paphos homes during the summer months, Paphos mayor Savvas Vergas pledged yesterday.

Speaking to a local radio station, Vergas said rainfall over the weekend had added more volume to dams and he reiterated recent comments that, “a more relaxed approach to water supply” would be taken.

He added that all water boards in Cyprus would implement the same flexible programme, regarding water consumption.

However, he stressed, consumers must still be frugal with the precious commodity and underlined that a hosepipe ban remains in place.

Vergas said residents found to be consuming high amounts of water would be subject to the high tariffs, which remain in place from last summer.

Meanwhile, head of Paphos Water Board, Kyriacos Spanos, confirmed that as of yesterday, Aspro Kremmnos dam is holding 16.6m cubic metres, whilst Kanavou dam is holding 8.4m cubic metres.

Spanos said he was “pleased and satisfied” with the recent rains, adding that there should now be water available for agricultural irrigation. He concluded that he hoped more rain would arrive in Cyprus increasing dam capacity measurements.

Farmers have already begun discussions as to how water for irrigation will be distributed for the remainder of the year.
