Greek expert suggests closing Paphos seafront during summer

A GREEK traffic specialist, Spyros Vouyas, presented his study of the newly upgraded seafront area at the town hall on Thursday night. A decision to open the road to traffic was implemented last year after the mayor of Paphos, Savvas Vergas, was outvoted by members of the council, in favour of opening the multi-million-euro upgrade to traffic.

Vouyas announced that in his opinion, the promenade should be closed to traffic for four months of the year, June, July, August and September, and open to traffic for the remaining eight months of the year. He added that during the summer months traffic would be diverted away from the front, travelling past Papantonious supermarket, up Alkminis streets and then will join Poseidonos Avenue, bypassing the main seafront area.

Last year demonstrations for and against the opening of this stretch of Poseidonos avenue were held in Kato Paphos, with shop and café owners claiming their businesses would be adversely affected by closing the road to traffic.

Meanwhile, most visitors and locals to the area offered a preference for the area to be closed to all traffic. Vouyas will present his ideas at an open session at the old electricity powerhouse on March 31..
