New centre for blood disorders

CYPRUS is on track to acquire a modern Scientific Centre for the study of haematological malignancies.

Health Minister Christos Patsalides yesterday said:“The high socioeconomic costs of haematological malignancies make it necessary to promote the necessary structures to offer health services to patients. The government, acknowledging the need for such a centre have given land to build the facilities of the Centre and the Karaiskakio Foundation”.

Patsalides said that the Health Ministry supported and commended the effort of the Karaiskakio Foundation for the creation of the Centre, to develop the sector in the clinical and research level, where services will be provided by distinguished scientists.

Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Karaiskakio Foundation Dr Adamos Adamou said: “Through the Centre, a national archive of haematological malignancies will be created to collect detailed epidemiological data that will help to develop in a rational and proper financial planning of the health services”.

Adamou also said that the Centre would contribute to attracting new scientists with the help of collaborators in Cyprus and abroad it will help create an excellent world-class scientific centre.

“In Cyprus, we have estimated to have around 400-500 new cases of haematological malignancies a year, of which 100 cases include leukaemia with incalculable social and economic impacts”.
