Car listings drop in January

CAR REGISTRATIONS dropped by more than a fifth in January compared to the same month the year before.

According to the Statistical Service, last month’s car registrations totalled 4,456, compared to 5,672 in January 2008, marking a 21.4 per cent slump.

Saloon cars saw a 25.9 per cent fall in January, with registrations dropping to 3,342 compared to 4,512 the year before.

The figures confirm what car dealers have been saying for the last few months: sales are down. Just last month, car importers cancelled the Motorshow 2009, citing a 40 per cent drop in sales and the global economic downturn as decisive factors.
