Brits, Greeks and even a Slovenian running in local elections

ALTHOUGH candidates for local councils and village leadership are not officially submitting their names until Monday, the Cyprus Mail can reveal that 11 EU nationals have declared their interest in running.

A spokesman for the Paphos district office said yesterday: “There are eleven candidates from EU countries standing in the forthcoming municipal elections. Yeroskipou has one from Slovenia, whilst Peyia has three British candidates, Paphos has six Greek nationals and Polis has just one Greek national. This is a huge increase compared with the last elections.”

This is also the case of registered voters from EU member states, which now tops 12,343.The total number of registered voters is 546, 110. 

Meanwhile, in the four Paphos municipalities, there are sixty two people standing for positions on local councils. Of these, 16 are backed by political parties AKEL and DIKO, respectively and 13 for both DISY and EDEK. EVROKO is submitting four candidates.

In Polis Chryoschous AKEL has eight hopefuls, DIKO and DISY each has five and EDEK four.

Yeroskipou has 29 candidates all vying for council positions- DISY and EDEK both have eight, AKEL has seven, DIKO five and ANEXARTHTOS has one.

Peyia has 24 candidates in total, six for DISY, and four each for AKEL, DIKO  and EDEK. The coalition of independents has three candidates and a new group ‘Proodeftiko Kinema’ has put forward four candidates.

The lists have been posted at the district office in Paphos and there will now be a 24-hour period in which time objections may be raised.
