Tragedy repeats itself

By Maria Gregoriou

The play the Kypria International Festival 2015 will put on next is very similar to Wuthering Heights, only without the moors and the Yorkshire dialect.

Erofili Repeat is a contemporary adaptation of the classic Cretan renaissance tragedy Erofili by Georgios Chortatsis (written around 1595), considered to be a play that represents the great minds and stories of the time.

The love story takes place in an Egyptian town. King Philogonos has a daughter, Erofili, who is raised with Panaretos, an orphan the king has raised as his own.

Erofili and Panaretos fall in love and get married secretly. When the king finds out they have defied his authority, he is outraged and sets a brutal plan to punish them.

Erofili Repeat is a contemporary reading of the play. Keeping the main focal points, it combines the lyricism of the verse with the narration of the story.

The story is brought to life by Omada One/Off, a group founded in 2006 by Maria Kyriakou, Maria Kafkaridou and Panos Bartzis, aiming at experimenting with theatrical form.
