Fuel being moved from Vassilikos

THE REMOVAL of fuel oil and diesel began on Thursday from the damaged fuel tanks at Vassilikos power station to Moni and Dhekelia power stations under the supervision of the Fire Department.

According to Electricity Authority acting spokesman, Yiannis Tsouloftas the fuel totalling 87,000 tonnes at an estimated value of €41m remained in the tanks at Vassilikos after the July 11 naval base blast. 

A total of three boatloads will be operated with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes each. The fuel transfer, which will be transported by Limassol-based Company INTERORIENT to Dhekelia and Moni will be completed by October 16.

Turbines 1, 2 and 3, which used fuel oil suffered extensive damage and are not expected to be repaired and up and running before the summer of 2013.
