Restaurant review: The Noodle House, Limassol

In the hot months of summer people traditionally head for fish taverns, but I was in the mood for noodles. I had had a nagging feeling about them since walking past an incongruous building in Ayios Andreas that was The Noodle House.

Ayios Andreas lies at the heart of old Limassol and has become the new hub of the city. The ‘old’ has become the new epicenter of spending a pleasant night out. Noted for its traditional, vintage feel, it brings out the artistic side of the establishments enclosed within, drawing in locals and out-of-towners alike. The Noodle House lies within, although it can be quite tricky to find.

The restaurant has been decorated with detail and precision. Avoiding exaggerated décor, it is simple yet very sophisticated. With a small fishbowl hole in the wall the customer can also take a peep at what is going on in the kitchen, it’s always reassuring peeping in the kitchen and monitoring what is going on ‘backstage’.

However, I think one my favourite part of the restaurant – regardless of the food – was the ordering. As you sit down you receive a pen and an order pad. To order all you have to do is tick the boxes and voila! That is your food order. In charge of the order myself, I had to have everything, I had to tick as many boxes as possible!

Onto the food! I started with spicy lemongrass crab cakes and the notorious prawn crackers. Although I’m not a fan of crab cakes the lemongrass really complemented them and made the dish tastier than I thought it would have been. The spicy lemongrass is really a sauce that should be tested. However, the prawn crackers were below average. They felt a little stale and tasteless, which was disappointing as they had to follow the crab crackers and they failed to meet the challenge.

I quickly forgot the prawn crackers with the amount of food that was on its way, including that other must have dish roasted duck with hoisin sauce. This time I was not disappointed. The duck was cooked to perfection; every mouthful was a blast of taste. No pieces to waste. I soon cleared that dish. And there was more to come.

The ‘main course’ consisted of the Singapore noodles with chicken and prawns and Green Thai Curry with chicken and vegetables. The Singapore noodles were just delicious. Maintaining the spicy element that was set at the beginning of the dinner, they made me crave more. The Thai curry though, although a tasty dish, it does not have the most appealing presentation. It is – no surprise here – a green sauce, with chicken and vegetables dipped into it. I will without shame admit to being hesitant to trying it, but I did, and didn’t regret it. The spiciest dish of them all, the green sauce had me fooled. It was the ideal culmination to an already great meal.

And for wine lovers, The Noodle House offers a wide selection of wine to cater to every taste and need. All in all, I wanted noodles and I got a lot more! Without any major disappointments and with good service, The Noodle House should be on your to-do-list for those summer nights out.
