EAC issues cuts schedule

THE ELECTRICITY Authority of Cyprus (EAC) yesterday finally issued an indicative schedule for power outages, although the authority said it could change depending on unforeseen problems with the supply.

According to the schedule there will be 22 areas having one outage a day lasting for a maximum of two and a half hours between 8am and 7pm. Outside of those hours, cuts are not expected.

The easiest way for consumers to find out when a power cut will take place is to compare the time of a power cut they may have had on Monday or Tuesday.

“The time of an outage is expected to be the same,” an EAC statement said yesterday.

But the schedule is only good “given that nothing unforeseen happens with weather conditions or power production,” the statement warned. The EAC’s previous efforts to set up a schedule failed due to unit malfunctions.

In the case of changes an updated (but again indicative) programme will be uploaded on the EAC’s website on the morning of the day, the EAC said.

The EAC warns its customers that “at this primary stage there would be some mistakes” The authority again asked people to consciously save energy, which is “the best way to overcome these difficult conditions” and increases “the chance that the schedule is kept.”

A table (Greek only as of yesterday) with the affected areas and the schedule is available online on www.eac.com.cy or www.news.eac.com.cy.

People can also get prior warning a few minutes before power cuts on their mobile phones, the EAC said.

CyTA customers should locate the number of their area on the EAC’s website and send a message to 8011 texting: ON EAC and insert the area number. For example, for area 5 the message should read: ON EAC 5.

To unsubscribe customers can send a message saying OFF EAC (plus area number). MTN is expected to start offering the service from today.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Cyprus (BoC) has offered 10MW of power to the EAC, “for as long as necessary, to be used as the EAC sees fit so we can help serve Cyprus society,” the BoC’s Theodoros Aristodemou said.

The BoC has purchased generators amounting to a total of 20MW and will be off the grid and using 10MW for their own needs while giving for free the remainder to the EAC.
