Zivania star of new cocktail

A NEW twist was given to traditional Cypriot booze last weekend as bartenders from across the island came together to give it their all in the First Pancyprian Original Cyprus Cocktail Competition coordinated by the Cyprus Bartenders Association.

Topping the competition’s ‘Taste’ category was a drink made by hotel management student, Sergios Tikas, with key ingredients including red Zivania mixed with rose and grape cordial.

Held on Saturday at the brand new Archontiko Papadopoulou multifunction centre in the picturesque village of Kornos, the 12 bartenders involved were asked to produce what they believed to be the most unique and innovative concoction.

With Brandy Sour standing as the only official Cypriot cocktail that exists to date, the idea was that of making a bolder punch with a whole list of local produce to chose from including Zivania, cognac, liquors, Commandaria, juices and rose syrup made exclusively in the village of Agros. A maximum of seven different types of spirits were allowed per cocktail.

Each bartender made their mixed drink a total of three times on the day; once for the audience and twice for the panel of judges, which was made up of four professionals and amateurs. Participants were judged based on taste but also their skills and decorative abilities.

Top marks for good looks were given to a cocktail named ‘Patticha Martini’ made by bartender Kostas Nikolaides with a distinct watermelon flavour.

As for best technique, the winning title was given to Fotini Mambrook for her ‘Roze Paradise’. Archondiko Papadopoulou will be including the winning cocktails on its menu once it officially opens its doors to the general public come May. The Bartenders Association also hopes the new cocktails will be picked up and promoted at local bars, clubs and other establishments.
