Why the Cambridge Weight Plan is more than just a diet

In July 2006 a diet was introduced in Cyprus, which had already gained worldwide success as the best diet in history. This was the Cambridge Diet, developed by Professor Alan Howard at Cambridge University over 26 years ago after years of extensive clinical research. He wanted to create a diet that would be suitable for obese patients who needed fast and healthy weight loss for before undergoing surgery. His research led to the discovery that a very low calorie diet triggered a process called ketosis that assisted fast weight loss by fat burning after three days of dieting. Such was the success of the diet that it was then launched on the mass market.

Alan Howard wanted to ensure that anyone embarking on the diet would receive encouragement and support from a trained counsellor responsible for supplying the products and monitoring each customer’s weight loss. This proved to be one of the main selling points of the diet in helping customers stay motivated. Also, the programme included a series of steps designed to ensure that after reaching their weight loss target, customers would then complete the stages of stabilisation and maintenance so that they were educated in how to eat healthily to avoid putting the weight back on.

Cambridge Weight Plan in Cyprus

In Cyprus, the principle of how the diet is sold is still the same. Programmes range from 810 to 1,200 calories and so is not classed as very low in calories but enough to help a customer achieve mild ketosis. This fact is often misquoted in the press by advisers in the industry who offer opinions not backed by fact. Programmes in Cyprus start at 810 calories and are clearly visible as such in Cambridge publications and on its website and not at 350 calories as is often quoted.

The importance of the counsellor

The counsellor will discuss which programme is most suitable based on personal lifestyle and health status. To become a counsellor, he/she must have lost weight first on the diet. This enables them to understand the emotions of the customer and help them through their difficult times. Cambridge counsellors are constantly trained and developed to improve their understanding of medical conditions and nutrition. They have received training by the celebrated psychologist Miranda Sidera in neuro-linguistic programming to learn how to help the customer stay positive. They have also received training in cognitive therapy to help them support their customers through long term weight maintenance so that they do not regain weight. Such customer service is what separates the Cambridge Weight Plan from other diets.

Health benefits

The most satisfying result arising from losing weight on the Cambridge Weight Plan is that many customers who were once on medication for conditions such as diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and sleep apnoea are cured of them once they have been on the diet. Thanks to the all the vitamins and nutrients, they feel energised and relieved of the aches and pains they once had.

Recommended by doctors

Doctors all over Cyprus now recommend and also sell the diet as they trust it as a safe and healthy way for their patients to lose weight. Cyprus now has a serious obesity problem and doctors are using the diet as a safer alternative to the gastric band which is a far more drastic and intrusive – and which does not help to educate the patient in how to eat healthily to avoid future weight gain.

Awards

Since arriving in Cyprus, the Cambridge team has received three worldwide awards for its achievements and weight loss success: in 2008 for Best International Distributor, in 2009 for International Slimmer of the Year and also this year for Excellence.

Cambridge’s vision is that the company will continue to learn how to help customers stay slim long term. Completing the diet is the easy part… the challenge is helping them stay that way.
