Tsipras to represent Cyprus at European Council meeting on migrants

Re-elected Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will represent Cyprus during Wednesday’s European Council meeting President Nicos Anastasiades informed Council President Donald Tusk on Monday.

The matter was clarified between Anastasiades, currently in the US, and Tsipras once it was confirmed the latter would be sworn in prior to the meeting.

Anastasiades, in a letter, informed Tusk and outlined Cyprus’ stance on the escalating refugee crisis where he expressed his confidence a solution could be found through a balance of solidarity with the refugees but a need to protect borders.

Although Cyprus has not faced a mass influx of refugees compared to other EU countries, it recently rescued 115 refugees. Anastasiades said he agreed with separating refugees that need international protection and economic immigrants where he believes they should be sent back to their country of origin.
