Justice and Elation

Having been humiliated by the enemy a couple of weeks ago it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to the Arsenal – Milan contest, expecting another resounding win for the Rossoneri and an utter and total humiliation for Wenger and his nearly men.

At half-time of this encounter I felt numb and speechless. My wife tried to attract my attention by offering me a glass of wine but I was ‘lost’. All I could see in front of me was Wenger lifting the Champions League Cup surrounded by jubilant Arsenal players. For me humiliation had taken on a new dimension.

My good wife prodded me twice this time and I returned to reality. The TV punters were singing the praise of Arsenal’s performance convinced that Arsenal’s exhilarating play and Milan’s porous defense would ensure yet another remarkable comeback for them. Five, six, no seven nil proclaimed McManaman. I didn’t want to hear any more of this as depression began to set in.

As I was about to switch off the TV and trudge towards the bedroom, Trevor Francis offered me a ray of hope. ‘Arsenal cannot play as well as they did, and Milan as bad as they did for the full ninety minutes. Milan will come back strongly so don’t write them off just yet’. I decided to stay up and watch the second half.

Thankfully Francis’s predictions/comments became a reality. Apart from one (albeit gilt-edged) opportunity, Arsenal were lost. Milan controlled play and became stronger as the game progressed. They could easily have scored a couple of goals themselves if it weren’t for Arsenal’s Polish keeper Szczesny.

I don’t know how my dear gooner friend Angel is feeling right now but who cares, justice -for a Spursman was done – and another trophy-less season for Wenger’s men was now a fact.
