UNHCR Cyprus and APOEL join hands in support of refugees

United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Cyprus and APOEL Football Club have teamed up to help refugees and those forcibly displaced or due to violence and persecution.

The UNHCR said today in a statement: ”This humanitarian initiative by APOEL is very much welcomed as it comes at a time when the Middle East and the Mediterranean region from Tunis to Syria and beyond are witnessing increasing political instability, and where untold atrocities are being committed everyday against innocent civilians.”

”It is very important at this difficult time to send a message of solidarity with those victims of violence and to provide support to the efforts of the international community to protect and assist those innocent people.”

APOEL has already posted on its website UNHCR’s banner which says “I’m 1 who cares”. APOEL fans can therefore already show their support by clicking on the UNHCR banner.

At the next home game of APOEL, on the February 10, a short message from Angelina Jolie, UNHCR’s Goodwill Ambassador, will be displayed on the video wall of the GSP stadium.

”Together in partnership we can show that we care, and send the message that violence against men, women and children is unacceptable”, says Nasr Ishak, UNHCR Representative in Cyprus.

APOEL’s initiative provides a significant support to UNHCR’s global campaign that calls on the individuals, organisations, corporations and other groups to take action and “Do 1 thing” in solidarity with refugees and forcibly displaced people, UNHCR Cyprus noted.
