Segway seduction

NICOSIA’s Segway Station hosted its first treasure hunt this month and is about to host another tomorrow afternoon.

Imagine a feeling like hovering above the ground at speed with complete control over any terrain. These two-wheel electrical personal transporters are fast, fun and highly manoeuvrable, steering is easy, you lean forward to go forward and lean back to go backward. Segways are a marvel of technology and offer an entirely new and unique experience that’s thrilling, great fun and full of excitement. 

The all terrain tyres used means that Segways can take people on tarmac footpaths, grass or even muddy tracks. Of course, expert riders are on hand to show you how to control the thing, which, despite looking tricky, is pretty easy to master. Most people over the age of 14 can operate a Segway, but anyone below 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Once in control, you will delight in exploring the culture and history of the city.

Nicosia’s cool Saturday afternoon set the perfect scene for a hunt a couple of weeks back. People arrived in crews of two, and after some warm coffee and thorough training, they were ready to hit the road. 

Once everyone was ready, they were given their bag of challenges, and an hour and half to complete as many of the tasks as possible. The city came alive to the thrill of excitement, the sound of Segways whizzing about and pirates scrabbling to win. 

Teams adopted different strategies to try and win, but in the end, there could be only one. It was a close call, but later that afternoon Evangelos Tryfonos  and Eleni Avgousti won Segway Station merchandise, a full experience-tour of Old Nicosia and a delicious serving of marshmallows and fruit in a chocolate fountain.

Once the race was over, the teams enjoyed some meze and warm drinks while relaxing and laughing about their adventure within the old city. Tomorrow you can take part in Segway’s second treasure hunt. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner Segway are now also offering a special Valentine’s Day themed tour starting from February 7 until 14.
