Missing person buried

COSTAS Caroullas from Mousoulita village in Famagusta, who was killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion, was yesterday given a proper funeral in Larnaca.

Labour Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous who addressed the mourners spoke of Caroullas’ history.

Caroullas was born in a poor family of seven who worked the land to make ends meet.

Caroullas, still a young boy, left primary school to help support his family.

He worked for years in construction and then farming, joining union PEO and supported workers’ rights.

He married in 1961 in Asha and had four children.

During 1974 he was called to serve in the National Guard.

Caroullas and two others – hailing from Asha – were captured in the Turkish Cypriot village of Mora and all three were shot, Charalambous said.

He was 33 at the time.

Caroullas’ remains were exhumed in 2008 from a mass grave in the village of Asha in Famagusta.

“May (Caroullas’) sacrifice be an eternal beacon,” Charalambous said.
