When death comes knocking

By Maria Gregoriou

The Rialto theatre in Limassol has done with its summer outdoor cinema screenings and will be taking things inside again for screenings of performances from the National Theatre Live programme.

And it will all start on Monday with a screening of the play Everyman broadcasted from the Olivier Theatre in London.

The main role of the play is taken on by BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (for 12 Years a Slave). Ejiofor takes the role to new heights in one of English drama’s oldest plays – which has been around since the 15th century – directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris and adapted by Britain’s current poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy.

Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out.

This spiritual myth asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives.

Rialto, for another year, is a member of the National Theatre Live venues network, using high definition technology to offer us a unique experience to watch live broadcasts of some of the most popular and important theatrical performances to be staged.

So get ready for yet another year of travelling to London via the big screen.
