Remand for passing counterfeit notes

Famagusta District Court on Monday remanded a 31-year-old man who lives in Limassol for four days, in connection with possessing and using counterfeit money.

According to police, a bar employee in Ayia Napa reported that at about 1am, a man paid for his drinks with a €50 note that seemed to be fake.

Arriving at the scene, police found he had a €50 and €100 note on him that they suspected were counterfeit. After searching his car, they also found another eight such notes and a plastic bag that contained half a gramme of cannabis.

At about 4am the bar employee went to the Famagusta police and gave them another €50 note he found while counting the cash at the end of his shift. Based on CCTV footage, the 31-year-old was the one who had handed it in earlier in the evening.

Famagusta CID and drug squad are investigating the case.
