Limassol beach eyesores demolished

SEVERAL unlicensed establishments were torn down on three Limassol beaches early Wednesday morning as part of government efforts to clamp down on illegal constructions on the beachfront.

Crews of the Limassol district office raided a beach in Dasoudi and two beaches in Parekklisia and took down unlicensed establishments, including canteens, cafeterias and bars, while all equipment was confiscated.

Interior minister Socratis Hasikos said he gave instructions to all district officers to record unlicensed establishments along the whole beachfront of coastal towns.

He also said that owners were asked to take necessary measures to legalise their establishments and that many did so and received support from his ministry. But others refused to cooperate “and it could not be tolerated by the government”, he said, adding it was a matter of principle to demolish them.
