Biker killed in Limassol, despite wearing helmet

A 22-year-old man from Limassol, Panayiotis Demetriou, died Monday afternoon after the motorcycle he was riding had a head-on collision with a car.

Police said that Demetriou lost control of his bike near the Ypsonas town hall and crossed into the opposite lane where he crashed into a car driven by a 46-year-old man.

From the violent collision, Demetriou hit the car’s windshield and from there he was hurled onto the asphalt. He died instantly, police said.

“The motorcyclist wore a safety helmet but it was not enough to save his life because of the violent collision,” Limassol police spokesman Ioannis Soteriades said.

The 22-year-old was taken to the Limassol hospital where his death was confirmed. The 46-year-old car driver was injured lightly.

Soteriades urged drivers and young motorcyclists to be especially careful, wear their helmets and follow the traffic code and rules.
