Motor vehicle registrations rise in first six months

The number of new vehicles registered increased 11.4 per cent in the first six months of the year to 12,470 compared to 11,190 during the same period last year according to Cystat.

Meanwhile, passenger saloon cars increased 16.7 per cent between January to June to 10,432 from last year’s 8,936 for the same period. From this year’s figures, 46.1 per cent were new cars and 53.9 were used.

Registration of goods conveyance vehicles increased 1.6 per cent to 951 during the first six months of 2015, compared to 936 in the same period last year whereas light goods vehicles increased 3.8 per cent to 819, from 789 in January to June 2014.

Heavy goods vehicles registrations decreased 8.8 per cent to 83 in the first six months of year from 91 in the same period last year.

There was a 12.5 per cent decrease in the number of road tractor (units of trailers) registrations to 49 in January to June this year from 56 in January to June 2014.

In regards to moped registrations less than 50cc, the numbers fell 17.5 per cent to 99 registrations compared to 120 last year during the first six months.

Motorbikes over 50cc also decreased by 19 per cent to 868 registrations between January and June this year, compared to 1,072 for the same period last year.
